She is the author of the critically acclaimed "bible of cesarean prevention" Silent Knife: Cesarean Prevention and VBAC, which won an American Library Award for the best book in the field of Health and Medicine. She is the author of Open Season: A Survival Guide for Natural Childbirth, and is currently writing Birthquake! A Childbirth Book for Strong Women and Women Who Want to Be Strong. Nancy leads childbirth seminars all over the world, is a consultant to numerous childbirth organizations, and is a nationally known and sought-after childbirth speaker. She is a graduate of Boston University and the Massachusetts Basic Course in Midwifery. She completed a two-year midwifery apprenticeship and then trained at the Birth Center in Dearborn, Michigan, at Casa de Nacimiento in El Paso, Texas, and with the International School of Midwifery in Kingston, Jamaica. She was a La Leche Leader and she currently leads a variety of empowering workshops including Creating a Positive Birth, Grieving and Healing After a Disappointing or Traumatic Birth Experience, and Teaching More Effective Childbirth Classes. She was a preceptor for the Hands of Light Midwifery School and was recently asked to be the keynote speaker at the Australian Midwives' Conference on Home Birth. Heather Laier, CPM, has been attending births for over twenty years. She apprenticed to become a midwife for three years in the Boston area, attended numerous births with a supportive homebirth obstetrician, and attended the RIFSAC Basic Midwifery Course. She is the mother of twins, two more sons, and one daughter. She had a VBAC at home after two cesareans (Nancy was the labor assistant at this birth in 1981)! Her midwifery practice, Home Midwifery Services, is in Reading, Massachusetts. She often assists Nancy at births, and covers when Nancy is away. She has trained many apprentice midwives, has a private doula practice, and is certified in Reiki. She provides postpartum care and is an overnight postpartum care provider. Heather and Nancy have known one another for 25 years and are delighted to be working together. Between them, they have been priviledged to witness over 1700 births. Birth Day is dedicated to the apprenticeship model of midwifery; we are committed to providing aspiring midwives with an opportunity to gain experience with home birth. Two apprentice midwives train concurrently with Birth Day. Each is an integral part of yours and our birth team and is present at prenatal, postpartum, and home visits. In addition, they assist at births. There is much to do at a home birth, and you will see how busy and essential they are to us and to you! You will get to know them, and will understand why our clients very much enjoy their presence during visits and at the birth. As each of the apprentices becomes more skilled, she takes a slightly more active role, however, it is always each individual woman's decision as to how much contact she has with the students. Whatever, your comfort level, you can be proud that you are contributing to the creation of a new midwife!
