"That's exactly right"

The story of a VBAC home birth by Allyson Poole-Foster

This is a poem that was written after the homebirth of Allyson's son, Zane Adam. She writes:
"Following a horrendous hospital birth of my daughter, Zoe Ryan, which ended with a cesarean section, I knew a gentle birth at home was what I needed to heal myself and to teach my daughter about the mystery and power of women and childbirth. Maybe my experience and this poem can inspire other women and mothers."
a chilly night
out of my slumber
a warm gush pulls me
familiar twinges
small beginnings
breathe, breathe, breathe

that's exactly right

early morning quiet
making calls
excited voices
is this real?
breathe, breathe, breathe

that's exactly right

surges slowing
taking a break
wanting more
snow is falling
focus returns
inward
breathe, breathe, breathe

that's exactly right

letting go
opening more
jack's calm voice
by my side
relax and open
time is lost
to us
breathe, breathe, breathe

that's exactly right

with rhythmic moans
my body's memories
of Jack's strong tenderness
by my side
breathe, breathe, breathe

that's exactly right

our bed supports
us once again
alone
we focus
and wait
while Sade serenades
breathe, breathe, breathe

that's exactly right

then Nancy's sweet voice
comes to me
calms me
soothes me
you're ten with lip!
breathe, breathe, breathe

that's exactly right

she reminds me
i can
relax deeper
focus
inward
no more lip
breathe, breathe, breathe

that's exactly right

overwhelming urges
take control
letting go
giving in
and giving all
push, push, push

that's exactly right

my first is here
by my side
with absolute
wonder
she loves me
ever encouraging
with a voice
that finds me
in my deepest place
brings me closer
to what is real
and perfect
push, push, push

that's exactly right

time stands still
laboring, laboring
constant jack
holding
molding
push, push, push

that's exactly right

everyone surrounds me
i'm alone
with my baby
bringing him closer
push, push, push

that's exactly right

his closeness
burning
anticipation
stinging
love all around me
holds me up
keeps me here
push, push, push

that's exactly right

sweet and slippery
i pull him to me
here he is
warm and wet
safe and quiet
strong and calm
my fresh little boy

elation
exhaustion
mama and daddy holding on
to our two little ones...

THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT!
